In Remembrance
64
Said the Devil with dread while the angel
simply read of Poe's complete mastery of
the dead while imprisoned in one
body that of a man.
Edgar Allen Poe is dead in Baltimore
so they said with a sad announcement
on a dreary Sunday morning one
October 7th chilly day of mourning
this great Poet.
So few they say grieved over
his passing though startled
not many left their posts to
take a notice only the lonely
Raven cawed for this Poet
lost by many.
Friends he had few and regrets
even fewer for this star that dimmed
and lost it's full sparkle so erratically
by fathers and brothers without his
kind of reputation.
Poe at times almost immortal his
eloquence so fluid and modulated
with unparalleled skill and almost
Raven black eyes that darted and
shot fiery into the desperate eyes
of onlookers who watched with vigor
as his face glowed yet changeless
in pallor.
His imaginations as sharp as a razor's
edge would cut to the core and
blood would flow in gushes of
lines penned and released
frozen from his heart.
With imagery he drew from
worlds where no mortals could
see into , he had the vision of
a genius let mad to explore on
earth while his soul opened up
the pit's of hell
he would entertain.
His words were such of the
gloomiest and ghastliest kind
and rejected all forms of customary
grandeur.
Like a chained wolf he ravaged
all forms of form and burst on
the scene with a sharply defined
simplicity and clearness set in mind.
Such wonderful creations he did bestow
upon the world most airy and delicate
was this sharp minded man who left us
spellbound and brought his readers
to their knees weeping like lost
children but wanting so much
more of this Poet and his passion.
A dreamer foremost was Edgar Allen Poe
who thrived and floated between Heaven
and Hell mystifying the logic with the
creatures that flashed from his
brain whilst walking the streets
on the edge of madness or
melancholy he set the stage
for so many others to
follow with depressed souls.
His posture was usually walking
awkwardly with lips moving in
frightful quivering curses or
prayers and eyes upturned
cursing the devil and all
that he damned with
forsaken idolatry
while his heart was
being gnawed from
invitation by the demons
he possessed within
Braving the wildest stormy nights
he would walk drenched in his
garments of dread beating the
winds and rain while the portals
of Hell opened inviting him in
yet rejection he did afraid for
those he would never again
see him walk the doom of
death that lay at his door
in the House of Usher
for evermore.
Poe like so many poet's
with a single glass of wine
reversed our very nature
and we scribed with souls
on fire intoxicated with
visible forces unknown we
were drawn to the edge
some may call insanity
and insulting arrogance
or gifted genius what
shall it be.
Vanity and depravity of ones
love torn from the open chest
of a possessed quite possibly
demonized heart it changes
ones character and good or
evil comes out in a flurry of
words so composed and
laden with blackest
intoxication of truth and right
The lamp was a light of poetry
with a far reaching beam that brought
on a wave of delightful pieces
from a quill of a genius at work
darkened they may be through
the passage of time yet never
forgotten the honors and
devotion Edgar Allen Poe
left us this legacy of love
for his craft with such
human passion and
bitter affliction and
recognition.
Let's lift our glass
to the scribe, the genius
the misunderstood the master
let us speak well of him forever
until no end. In remembrance of
Edgar Allen Poe I walk by his grave
with the deepest respect.
RIP my Poet.

Vincent,
This wasn't only an awesome tribute to one of my favorite writers, but an incredible description of him as well.
I could see the man, so much the way you've written him here, trudging through the rain, talking to himself, and I felt very sorry for him.
I do hope that somehow he knows what a monumental figure he became in the literary world, and that he has been regarded by generations as a master in his genre.
You've done a beautiful piece here in tribute to him. I wish he could have written, and enjoyed life as well. But, sadly, it doesn't seem to have turned out that way for him.

Somehow I knew that one day you'd write a poem about Poe. Wow, Wow, Wow! I am so glad that you did.
Well everyone is right this is so awesome .. Poe is the best.. You did a wonderful job describing him..
Great HUB no the best HUB..

Excellent! He was indeed a genius of the dark and mysterious and you've captured all that!
This one is amazing Vincent;you have really done the great man justice.
Take care and enjoy your day.
Eddy.
Poe was bound to be the perfect poet, with a life like his. Awesome tribute...
Poe was indeed a comsumate poet and he was also a brave man with the courage to show with his words the fears and insecurities that haunted his inner being. Like so many people of greatness, he had to pass from this world to really gain the appreciation for his work that should have been there all along. He was content to let his fellow man think him mad and march to his own drum letting his written words speak forever unto eternity for him. Good work on this one Sir...very good. UP and BEAUTIFUL. WB
Hi Vincent, I raise my glass to you for you are a great poet and while you are alive I want to appreciate you. Poe was great and deserve the praise and recognition, but you are my hero.
I read and reread your poem. I thought about Edgar Allen Poe and his brilliant stories.
I loved the personification in your poem.
Brilliant, Vincent, take your place next to Poe. You are as remarkable a writer as he was. Bravo and UP!
You may be interested to know that a new film, "The Raven," is on the way starring John Cusack as Poe. I viewed the trailer for the movie and Cusack looks very convincing - tall and pale with dark piercing, haunting-looking eyes. The story is a murder mystery revolving around several of Poe's most famous short stories.
It has been announced that the mysterious visitor to Poe's grave site will not happen again. Too bad. Someone should just decide to take up the mantle as with Valentino's veiled lady. Never mind if the person is unrelated to the original visitor. It's a beautiful tradition.
a great poem to honour this man near his birthday, Vincent.
Of course it meets with my approval, Ken!! I reserve "excellent" for the best! I can't believe in "perfect or flawless" as a possibility - that is far too static for living beings and flowing poetry, but - EXCELLENT is as good as it gets. Your tribute of someone I perceive is at least among your own personal muses has great depth and feeling for who he was and what he did in the realm of his genre of poetry. I admire it greatly. And yours even more, because I know the feelings that go into yours and his were somewhat distant, in a way - at least to me. So I prefer yours and yours ABOUT him gives me a better sense of him.
OH DRBJ - I would love to see that film! wow! John Cusack will be good. The only other actor I think who could do it justice would be Ed Norton.
absolutely one of your finest works - Bravo!
What a wonderful tribute to Poe..Your poetry reminds me of Poe. I believe you will also be remembered as a great poet, but without his idiosyncrasies. Thank you for sharing your gift....
A wonderful piece, rich and powerful. The imagery through your words is perfect.
I can't think of anyone more fitting to write this tribute for Poe. He lives on through the legacy he left.
A brilliant job
What a wonderful poet, but such a sad life. You are just as good Vincent, you amaze me. Vote up and across

My dearest Vincent...
I am a big fan of Poe. The anxiety, anticipation and imagery he painted with his words was pure mastery. I have always admired how he created a volume, heaviness and tempo in his writing. The pause...the whisper...the Shriek! You have paid a wonderful tribute to his work and have cast light against the darkness. I raise my glass to yours in praise of his legacy - Cheers! My friend!

Edgar was my first mad crush; I read every line he had ever written. In some ways, Poe introduced me to writing. His brilliance was, and will always be, indisputable.
His life, like so many other superb artists of the mind, was fraught with suffering, and he had the extraordinary courage to try to live by writing alone.
I lift my glass to toast this genius and fellow Bostonian, and the homage you have paid to him in this masterful and powerful tribute. Excellent, dear poet!
Vincent , I admire your words here , I think in some way that as life passes by us we either engage in the past or not, And of Poe , although I'm not a big reader of historical poetry , you do so well with your perfection of words! My friend , you do the masters an honor! As always we look up to your mysterious poetic wording! .... ED.......:-}
A fitting and well written tribute to a Great poet. Your words do you well my friend...............Chris
Vincent, your insight in Poe's circumstances, and your empathy with him and above all your admiration for him, makes this script of yours remarkable and again inspires me to read more of Poe. He suffered severe depression - at the time of his life this was regarded as madness.
Voted up and upper :)
I can´t imagine anyone being able to write a better tribute to this incredible man, than you did here.
One of your best , I´d say.
Thank you, Ken for inspiring us all.
excellent work. I used to love Poe when i was younger and I still have one of his anthologies handy. I should probably dust it off...
I was had the Complete works of Poe, an Original 1st edition and I think the guy I was dating at the time took it! He was a Collector. This is by far one of your Best works Vincent. A Truly Beautiful and Inspiring read!
Vincent , We can only imagine the greatness of such a writer, as usual his fame came long after his death?...I could be wrong yet you do him great justice here my friend!....:-}
Yes, I felt the leg tug, KEN. But I couldn't let your modesty stand unchallenged.
John Cusack has much going. Let me direct you to a performance as The Illusionis by Ed Norton which made him come to my mind as a possible Poe:

As for Johnny Depp, of course, he could do it. He can do any role to a "T"
Hugs
I love this fiercely visceral poem of yours and these lines of it grab and arrest my attention:
". . . while his heart was
being gnawed from
invitation by the demons
he possessed within. . ."
Your choice of words which cut like a razor to open and expose the readers' rawest feelings grows more and more masterful with each poem you write, Ken.
You certainly have come a long way, dear friend. I look forward to you writing more yourself. But whichever persona by which it's being written, it is always good.
I tried to leave a comment (using my cell phone) the day you posted this but I see it didn't go through. Poe, as you know was my favorite of poets. His melancholy and painful poems were always a comfort to me in my times of sadness and distress. Without Poe I would never have been influenced to write the poetry I write or perhaps think the way I do. He was a great writer, as are you and you did Poe proud by writing this wonderful poem honoring him! HUGS
One of my fave poets, too. I love the dark melancholy of Poe, so much that I read his complete works at the tender age of 12. Poems, short stories--loved it all. He and Miss Emily Dickinson are two of my favorite darker poets. I seem to be drawn to that stuff. But I digress. You paid Poe a wonderful tribute, Vincent. Well done. Voted up and everything but funny.
You really captured the essence of Poe. His writing and poetry was probably his best friend in his daily struggles. I have always been fascinated by Poe and his willingness to share the darker sides of life. I hit many buttons as I always do for you.
Vincent, dear friend and great poet, I raise my glass to both Poe and yourself. I often think of you as Poe incarnate.
Poe is one of my most favorite poets and when I read this masterful tribute of yours to the great man, tears flowed and my heart soared for the love of Poe's work. You are merging into legendary greatness with your style of writing.
Thank you so much for a beautifully written poem. Hugs and may you always walk in beauty, peace and harmony.
Vincent, I could sit under a cozy quilt with a continuous cup of tea and read you all day long. When I was growing up, the name Edgar Allen Poe sent shivers through me because my dear brothers used his poetry as words to frighten me -- not to be cruel, they were just boys and loved to be masters of fright.
Because of those "masters of fright" I began reading Poe at an early age and came to love, not just the stories and poems, but the man. I felt his sorrows, I saw the injustice done to him from being outcast and misunderstood, I cried with pain when I learned how he died alone due to the manipulations of political fanatics.
You are much like Poe in your writings, and I am drawn to your poems and stories like a butterfly to the sweetest of the garden -- yet you still have your unique style which is a personification of a true poet with deep, soulful thoughts that must be shared.
If we look back in history, most of the greatest writers, poets, and artists had severe struggles in life and therefore were able to heal by sharing their stories and words from their heart and soul. You are, my friend, among those great creative people. It is as simple and beautiful as that. It is not impossible in this day and age to know one who will some day be among the legends of the greats -- and with you, I feel we are among one of the greats.
Good grief! I should have just made a hub from this comment!!! I just might do that, with your permission.
Peace and Hugs, my dear friend.
nothing to so.. Just excellent poem..
I have no words Ken..this was by far one of the most creative poems ever, describing a complicated, gifted poet.Ken you keep topping your work, more awesome, more beautiful, and adding more magic with each stroke of your pen. This was truly great!
Hugs,
Sunnie

I have always had a soft spot for his genius, the Tell Tale Heart scared me speechless, in a quivering, exciting, love to be scared, sort of way, when I was a child. What a beautiful tribute you have penned to one who has long been due such a masterpiece as this. Voted up, awesome, beautiful and interesting. Shared and posted on my Facebook wall as well. Well Done! You inspire me.
