Said the Devil with dread while the angel

simply read of Poe's complete mastery of

the dead while imprisoned in one

body that of a man.

Edgar Allen Poe is dead in Baltimore

so they said with a sad announcement

on a dreary Sunday morning one

October 7th chilly day of mourning

this great Poet.

So few they say grieved over

his passing though startled

not many left their posts to

take a notice only the lonely

Raven cawed for this Poet

lost by many.

Friends he had few and regrets

even fewer for this star that dimmed

and lost it's full sparkle so erratically

by fathers and brothers without his

kind of reputation.

Poe at times almost immortal his

eloquence so fluid and modulated

with unparalleled skill and almost

Raven black eyes that darted and

shot fiery into the desperate eyes

of onlookers who watched with vigor

as his face glowed yet changeless

in pallor.

His imaginations as sharp as a razor's

edge would cut to the core and

blood would flow in gushes of

lines penned and released

frozen from his heart.

With imagery he drew from

worlds where no mortals could

see into , he had the vision of

a genius let mad to explore on

earth while his soul opened up

the pit's of hell

he would entertain.

His words were such of the

gloomiest and ghastliest kind

and rejected all forms of customary

grandeur.

Like a chained wolf he ravaged

all forms of form and burst on

the scene with a sharply defined

simplicity and clearness set in mind.

Such wonderful creations he did bestow

upon the world most airy and delicate

was this sharp minded man who left us

spellbound and brought his readers

to their knees weeping like lost

children but wanting so much

more of this Poet and his passion.

A dreamer foremost was Edgar Allen Poe

who thrived and floated between Heaven

and Hell mystifying the logic with the

creatures that flashed from his

brain whilst walking the streets

on the edge of madness or

melancholy he set the stage

for so many others to

follow with depressed souls.

His posture was usually walking

awkwardly with lips moving in

frightful quivering curses or

prayers and eyes upturned

cursing the devil and all

that he damned with

forsaken idolatry

while his heart was

being gnawed from

invitation by the demons

he possessed within

Braving the wildest stormy nights

he would walk drenched in his

garments of dread beating the

winds and rain while the portals

of Hell opened inviting him in

yet rejection he did afraid for

those he would never again

see him walk the doom of

death that lay at his door

in the House of Usher

for evermore.

Poe like so many poet's

with a single glass of wine

reversed our very nature

and we scribed with souls

on fire intoxicated with

visible forces unknown we

were drawn to the edge

some may call insanity

and insulting arrogance

or gifted genius what

shall it be.

Vanity and depravity of ones

love torn from the open chest

of a possessed quite possibly

demonized heart it changes

ones character and good or

evil comes out in a flurry of

words so composed and

laden with blackest

intoxication of truth and right

The lamp was a light of poetry

with a far reaching beam that brought

on a wave of delightful pieces

from a quill of a genius at work

darkened they may be through

the passage of time yet never

forgotten the honors and

devotion Edgar Allen Poe

left us this legacy of love

for his craft with such

human passion and

bitter affliction and

recognition.

Let's lift our glass

to the scribe, the genius

the misunderstood the master

let us speak well of him forever

until no end. In remembrance of

Edgar Allen Poe I walk by his grave

with the deepest respect.

RIP my Poet.

I have always had a soft spot for his genius, the Tell Tale Heart scared me speechless, in a quivering, exciting, love to be scared, sort of way, when I was a child. What a beautiful tribute you have penned to one who has long been due such a masterpiece as this. Voted up, awesome, beautiful and interesting. Shared and posted on my Facebook wall as well. Well Done! You inspire me.

Vincent,

This wasn't only an awesome tribute to one of my favorite writers, but an incredible description of him as well.

I could see the man, so much the way you've written him here, trudging through the rain, talking to himself, and I felt very sorry for him.

I do hope that somehow he knows what a monumental figure he became in the literary world, and that he has been regarded by generations as a master in his genre.

You've done a beautiful piece here in tribute to him. I wish he could have written, and enjoyed life as well. But, sadly, it doesn't seem to have turned out that way for him.

Poe was indeed a comsumate poet and he was also a brave man with the courage to show with his words the fears and insecurities that haunted his inner being. Like so many people of greatness, he had to pass from this world to really gain the appreciation for his work that should have been there all along. He was content to let his fellow man think him mad and march to his own drum letting his written words speak forever unto eternity for him. Good work on this one Sir...very good. UP and BEAUTIFUL. K.Burns Darling I admired Poe's work and so many were memorable, scary, thought provoking, sad yet filled with hope. He indeed knew who he was, why he was there and quite possibly where he would end up.The masterpieces he created, I just applauded him with these words I scribed thinking of him while drinking some of my wine and enjoying the flickering glow of my candle as it danced amongst the shadows on my wall.

@femmeflashpoint The description comes from many sources written of the man, I've simply added some of mine and twisted it thus. I am certain he knows of who he became after his death, the dark legend of poetry and very much a master in his genre. He led a sad and somewhat destrucitve life, but like most genius it comes with a price at the end.

@ Just Ask Susan, I forgot how much of a Poe fan you were, I am glad to have accomodated your wish, glad you enjoyed it.

@Deborah, thank you for your awesome remark. Yes Poe is the best and was the best. He is now still the best in another world, his legend lives on.

@Nellieanna Thank you for the shortest but excellent comment. I am so use to many words coming back from you. I hope this piece met with your approval? You did use the word Excellent, so it must have. LoL

@Eiddwen you to take care and enjoy your day and thank you for your kind words, Poe was indeed a great man to many and not so great to a few.

@A.A. Zavala Yes with adversity comes might. He was a mighty talented Poet indeed. He was born to be who he was and died accordingly.

@Wayne Brown I totally agree with every word you've offered here. Poe was all that and more, a life of being tomultous and living on the edge of poverty like so many of us have, brings with it the ghosts and demons that live within us. Thus we scribe the way we do, our Muse comes forth like a roaring liion filled with anger, death, hunger, thirst and ravages all in it's path. Dark poets are like that.. Poe was fullfilling his destiny as a scribe.

Brilliant, Vincent, take your place next to Poe. You are as remarkable a writer as he was. Bravo and UP!

You may be interested to know that a new film, "The Raven," is on the way starring John Cusack as Poe. I viewed the trailer for the movie and Cusack looks very convincing - tall and pale with dark piercing, haunting-looking eyes. The story is a murder mystery revolving around several of Poe's most famous short stories.

It has been announced that the mysterious visitor to Poe's grave site will not happen again. Too bad. Someone should just decide to take up the mantle as with Valentino's veiled lady. Never mind if the person is unrelated to the original visitor. It's a beautiful tradition.

Of course it meets with my approval, Ken!! I reserve "excellent" for the best! I can't believe in "perfect or flawless" as a possibility - that is far too static for living beings and flowing poetry, but - EXCELLENT is as good as it gets. Your tribute of someone I perceive is at least among your own personal muses has great depth and feeling for who he was and what he did in the realm of his genre of poetry. I admire it greatly. And yours even more, because I know the feelings that go into yours and his were somewhat distant, in a way - at least to me. So I prefer yours and yours ABOUT him gives me a better sense of him.

OH DRBJ - I would love to see that film! wow! John Cusack will be good. The only other actor I think who could do it justice would be Ed Norton.

Oh Cardisa my lovely, you extol such kindness on this poet. To be read before I am dead brings me great pleasure indeed. I know this is a venue where I share my words, will it reach any further that I do not know. But for now I am so pleased to have friends like you who like my work. Big Hugs from me to you.

@Vinaya Thank you for reading my tribute to a great writer indeed. I felt honoured to write what I did with humility for his greatness.

@Drbj I appreciate your kindness. However my friend I don't come close to measuring up to his quality of work, I simply am another humble poet scribing from my soul. He was the master, I am but his student in the wings.

I enjoyed the trailer and can't wait to see the new release. Your absolutely right, John Cussack does have a striking resemblance once done up with stage makeup. It looks like a thriller indeed. Again my dear gifted writer, I thank you for your accolade. Hugs xo

@Flora thank you, Poe's visitation a mystery, however he is honoured by haven been blessed with the talent as a writer that he was. Many of his ghosts and demons he did expel from his pen and the world was left with his great legacy and work. He is and always will be one of the masters of the dark pen that I will always follow. Hugs

@Nellieanna I was pulling your beautiful leg, did you not feel my tug:-) Excellent it is then and I accept it with deep gratitude. Poe thrived in his genre and left us with so much excellent material to enjoy and be inspired from as did Emily for you.

You admire mine even more is an accolade of great measure, I can never be compared to this master of the dark and intrigue. My feelings poured from my soul 21 months ago and they still come forth with each scribe I pen here. I am humbled by your gift to me and respect every word shown for my possible talent as a new poet.

I looked at both John Cusack and Ed Norton both are excellent choices, but I favor John's darker looks, although even Johnny Depp would be a contender don't you think? Regardless the trailer looks fascinating and I can't wait to see it when brought out to the theatre. Hugs from me to you and kisses to xo

missolive Cheers right with you and may the legacy of Poe's scribes that he left us continue on into time. I totally agree with your description of this man of sorrow, pain, pause and whisper. His darkness though heavy, his talent outshone it and the light crept in.

@Genna East I tend to agree with you on Poe's brilliance and no doubt about his talent. Indeed he was a man of adversity, much brought on by his sorrow, depression and drinking. He like I in many way had similarities from our youth, we as Poets are able to take that pain and sorrow and expand it into our verse. I to lift my glass to your fellow Bostonian, may his soul be somewhere else on the other side of time and still be scribing for many souls.

@ahorseback My mysterious poetic wording? Interesting you should scribe this my friend. I am simply a scribe like yourself, ever searching our souls and emptying our vessel into the air, with the intent to share it with others. Some will see themselves in us and others will deplore what we pen with fears only known to themselves. Thank you Ed.

@Scarface Thank you for your very fitting comment to a master of the mysterious world he lived in at his time and space and sorrows. He left us much food for thought indeed.

@Martie Poe has always been a favorite scribe of mine and in some ways I have studied him, as I noted above in many cases we had similar darkness, losses, sorrows and pain in our lives, thus I am able to draw from my deep well of sadness. Oh my dear madness comes in many shapes and forms and genius as well. Their were many considered mad genius's throughout our long history. It pays to associated and walk amongst these giants of history, even though it be by reading so many of them.

@Dim Thank you my kind friend, he deserves as much praise that was taken from him in his sorrow and depressed state of mind. He is one of my hero's and I have always admired his writings.

One of my fave poets, too. I love the dark melancholy of Poe, so much that I read his complete works at the tender age of 12. Poems, short stories--loved it all. Lady_Tenaz. I know Poe is one of your favorite poets. He has stirred the hearts and souls of many with his scribes he left us. Many have written of him and about him and his work. @Victoria Lynn Thank you for the compliment and I am also glad to read of how much he is an influence on your writing. He has cast a long shadow on many and left us an abundance to draw from indeed. Hugs

@Minnetonka Twin Yes indeed his comforter most of his life was his ability to lay his words down before all to read. His love of his life however died to early and thus his heart was broken. Vincent, I could sit under a cozy quilt with a continuous cup of tea and read you all day long. When I was growing up, the name Edgar Allen Poe sent shivers through me because my dear brothers used his poetry as words to frighten me -- not to be cruel, they were just boys and loved to be masters of fright.

Because of those "masters of fright" I began reading Poe at an early age and came to love, not just the stories and poems, but the man. I felt his sorrows, I saw the injustice done to him from being outcast and misunderstood, I cried with pain when I learned how he died alone due to the manipulations of political fanatics.

You are much like Poe in your writings, and I am drawn to your poems and stories like a butterfly to the sweetest of the garden -- yet you still have your unique style which is a personification of a true poet with deep, soulful thoughts that must be shared.

If we look back in history, most of the greatest writers, poets, and artists had severe struggles in life and therefore were able to heal by sharing their stories and words from their heart and soul. You are, my friend, among those great creative people. It is as simple and beautiful as that. It is not impossible in this day and age to know one who will some day be among the legends of the greats -- and with you, I feel we are among one of the greats.

Good grief! I should have just made a hub from this comment!!! I just might do that, with your permission.

Peace and Hugs, my dear friend.

Vincent Moore profile image

Vincent Moore Hub Author 2 months ago

My dear Phyllis, you gift me with such splendid words from your heart. To honor me in this way makes for a wonderful cozy feeling indeed. I would join you with tea and sweets as we read each others work:-) Yes for some Poe was to dark and dreary and melancholy, yet for millions of others who discovered his work long after his death, he became ICONIC as a poet of great magnitude.

Yes his life was filled with turbulence and his death bizarre to say the least, it was best he leave and be with his Lenore, his time was definitely nigh. To be compared to Poe is beyond my understanding, I am simply a conveyor of my thoughts, without my Muse I am simply a lost soul with quill in hand. I share from all my past experiences and I have said many times before this, I draw from a very deep well. I hope to leave something behind of me to share with the world, maybe they will find my scribes buried amongst my remains someday and just maybe think that I had something worthwhile to scribe and share.

I have walked in sorrow and melancholy most of my boyhood and teen life. My adult life was wrought with failure and success, I could not hang on to the love of a woman. It came to a point where I felt I was unlovable, I lost my self-respect and dignity. I did not trust many people and for some reason I had grave difficulty finding my total comfort with a woman for a long period of time. I dated, I married twice, I lost both marriages and the last my children along with it. I have resigned to live alone, write, cook, read and share my soul in my scribes. I know I will go to my last days with not much to have left the world or my family, but I am comforted knowing that I did experience the taste of greatness in many things I did in my life.

This is one of the kindest accolades I've ever been bestowed upon by a fellow scribe and I thank you from the very deepest part of my heart and soul. You made me blush a number of times reading this and gave me thoughts that just maybe I have been gifted this late in my life. I never picked up a pen to scribe until I found Hub Pages, Rawlus and Wayne Brown. I have not stopped since. You are a gem, a friend a kindred spirit from afar, yet our hearts and souls have touched in many of our left comments. I know you know me some how and in someway that comforts me. Peace and hugs back to you my dear friend. I am now speechless, I will have to write more of this, maybe in a poem.
